I tried to implement a third option with kdialog and SUDO_ASKPASS but in the end it got to error prone for a feature which is probably never used (since when kdialog When i open the file directly from a su shell (with /opt/kde3/bin/kwrite /etc/fstab) there is no problem. In the end, gparted should just use PolicyKit or whatever instead of being started completely as root, but I guess it will take a while until that is the case.
Whenever launching Kate, whether by opening a text file or by clicking the Kate icon, a dialog box pops up that KDEInit could not launch 'konsole'. I cannot access terminal to check file integrity. When using notepad (not sure what this is, it's just in my right click contex menu under "open with...") the permissions persisted after I saved. I will update when I find out something new.
