This works, Kate opens and I can edit and save files with superuser privileges (which I need to do for some configuration files). Fixed by opening the file .local/share/applications/kde4-kate.desktop And changing the line: X-DBUS-StartupType=Multi to X-DBUS-StartupType=none Which fixed the error for me. It explains in detail how this page works. This should work with all KDE application icons that you want to run as root and should prevent the "KDEInit could not launch kdesu" error message from appearing after you try
